Granger Causality Test To Study Causal Relationships Finance Essay - Free Essay Example

SME, self-employed and business ownership are used interchangeably in our context. There are many definitions for SME and according to SPRING Singapore; an SME refers to enterprises with fixed asset investment of lesser than S$15 million for manufacturing sector and less than 200 employees for non-manufacturing sectors. There is little published information on business ownership and SMEs in Singapore. The only statistics on the rate of start-ups of business and companies are available in the Yearbook of Statistics (Tan, 2002). As such, we use the number of business formed and the number of companies formed to proxy business ownership and self employment. We also generate a series, named STARTUPS using the sum of companies and businesses. STARTUPS = FORM_BUS + FORM_COMP Annual time series of formation of businesses and formation of companies from 1990 to 2009 are obtained from the Singapore Yearbook of Statistics. Business refers to a business firm, operating either as a sole-proprietorship or a partnership. It may be set up by individuals or companies. A company refers to a business entity registered under the Companies Act, Chapter 50. It has a legal personality (i.e. it has the right to own properties, it has perpetual succession and it can sue or be sued in its own name). It usually has the words Pte Ltd or Ltd as part of its name. Annual average unemployment rates, annual GDP and per capita GDP of these 20 years are also obtained from Department of Statistics, Singapore. 4.2 Methodology In regression model, existence of relationship between variables does not prove causality. In this paper we will use the Granger Causality test (Geweke, 1982, 1984; Geweke, Meese, Dent, 1983; C.W.J. Granger, 1969) to study causal relationships. The Granger Causality test is a statistical hypothesis test used to determine if one series can be used to forecast another. Unlike the classical linear regression model which shows only correlation, this test can reveal causality. The Granger Causality test is more preferred to Sims Causality Test as the Sims test uses more regressors, leading to a bigger loss of degree of freedom (Sims, 1980). The Vector Autoregression (VAR) model is usually used in Granger Causality due to its simplicity. 4.2.1 Unit Root Test Granger causality tests are only strictly valid for stationary series[1]and should therefore be preceded by a check of the order of integration of the variables, i.e. whether the data generating processes show a unit root or not. Many economic time series are not stationary at the levels (Nelson Plosser, 1982). As a first step, we used the Dickey Fuller (DF) unit root test (Dickey Fuller, 1979). If a series is non stationary in their level forms but is stationary in its first differenced form, we say the series is integrated of order 1. As the Granger Causality test follows the result of this unit root test, it is important to correctly determine this step. Hence we also performed an alternative unit root test, the Philips Perron test which is a generalized ADF test allowing autocorrelated residuals (Phillips Perron, 1988). 4.2.2 Cointegration Test Before performing Granger Causality Test on the series, cointegration tests are first carried out to test if there exist long run relationships between the variables. If two series are cointegrated, it means that at any point in time the two variables may drift apart, but there will always be a tendency for them to retain a reasonable proximity to each other. Following Granger and Lin (1995), two integrated series cannot cause each other in the long run unless they are cointegrated, in which case the Granger Causality will have to be tested using Vector Error Correction model (VECM). Cointegration test are only carried out on pairs of series that are non-stationary and are both integrated of the same order. In this paper, we will perform the Engel-Granger cointegration test (Engle Granger, 1987). Engle and Granger (1987) also point out that the critical values are different from that of Fuller (1976). 4.2.3 Constructing VAR Equations In Audretsch, Carrie and Thurik (2001), the following VAR equations are estimated using panel data of OECD countries from 1974 to 1998. In (1), the lagged endogenous unemployment variables are added into the equation to correct for autocorrelation of unemployment growth over time. A negative coefficient ÃÆ'Ã… ½Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ² is found, showing a clear Schumpeter effect of entrepreneurship reducing unemployment. Coefficient c is also negative, suggesting cyclical effect related to influence of policy measure. Similarly, we would like to examine these equations in the context of Singapore. For these OECD countries, Audretsch et al (2001) use a L=4 time span. On the other hand, Golpe van Stel (2007) use a L=2 time span in estimating this relationship in Spain. These time span is used as the impact of self employment on unemployment rate is not instantaneous; it requires a few year for firms to grow and if likely to contribute to the economy. In view of unemployment, it is also likely that people take time to make mental preparation before deciding to be self-employed. Before constructing the model, we will first determine the suitable length of time span, L for Singapore. We start by constructing simple VAR models with J=1 lag for each proxy of business ownership (start-ups, formation of business and formation of companies) to determine the optimal L. We estimate the following equations and select the best model using model selection criterion. After determining the optimal L*, we construct equation (1) and (2) with variation in J=1,2 and 3 to choose the best number of lagged terms to be included in the model to describe this causal relationship. Granger causality test is then run on these models. Similarly, we construct VAR model as in equation (1) and (2) to investigate the causal relationship between Singapores business start-ups and economic growth. U is replaced with Y to represent annual GDP. U in equation (1) and (2) is then replaced with X, representing GDP Per Capita. Statistical package, EViews 6.0 which has built in unit root test will be used to carry out the analysis. Representation of all series in EVIEWS is shown in Table 2 of Appendix A.

What Is the Chemical Composition of Farts

Farts are the common name for flatus or flatulence. Have you ever wondered what farts are made of and whether they are the same for everyone? Heres a look at the chemical composition of farts. Chemical Composition of Farts The exact chemical composition of human flatulence varies from one person to another, based on his or her biochemistry, the bacteria inhabiting the colon,  and the foods that were eaten. If the gas results from ingesting air, the chemical composition will approximate that of air. If the fart arises from digestion or bacterial production, the chemistry may be more exotic. Farts consist primarily of nitrogen, the principal gas in air, along with a significant amount of carbon dioxide. A typical breakdown of the  chemical composition of farts is: Nitrogen: 20-90%Hydrogen: 0-50% (flammable)Carbon dioxide: 10-30%Oxygen: 0-10%Methane: 0-10% (flammable) Lighting Farts on Fire: The Blue Flame Human flatus may contain hydrogen gas and/or methane, which are flammable. If sufficient amounts of these gases are present, its possible to light​ the fart on fire. Keep in mind, not all farts are flammable. Although flatus has great YouTube fame for producing a blue flame, it turns out only about half of people have the archaea (bacteria) in their bodies that are necessary to produce methane. If you dont make methane, you may still be able to ignite your farts (a dangerous practice!), but the flame will be yellow or possibly orange rather than blue. The Smell of Farts Flatus often stinks! There are several chemicals that contribute to the smell of farts: skatole (a by-product of meat digestion)indole (a by-product of meat digestion)methanethiol (a sulfur compound)dimethyl sulfide (a sulfur compound)hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor, flammable)volatile aminesshort-chain fatty acidsfeces (if present in the rectum)bacteria The chemical composition and thus odor of farts differs according to your health and diet, so you would expect a vegetarians farts to smell different from those produced by a person who eats meat. Some farts smell worse than others. Flatus that is high in sulfur-containing compounds is more odiferous than farts consisting almost exclusively of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. If your goal is to produce stinky farts, eat foods that contain sulfur compounds, such as cabbage and eggs. Foods that lead to increased gas production increase the volume of flatus. These foods include beans, carbonated beverages, and cheese. Scientists Who Study Farts There are scientists and medical doctors who specialize in the study of farts and other forms of intestinal gas. The science is called flatology and the people who study it are called flatologists. Do Men Fart More Than Women? While women may be more discrete about farting, the truth is females produce just as much flatus as men. The average person produces about a half a liter of flatus per day. Farts vs. Flatus The gas that is produced and released through the rectum is called flatus. The medical definition of the term includes gas that is swallowed and that is produced within the stomach and intestines. To produce an audible fart, the flatus vibrates the anal sphincter and sometimes the buttocks, producing a characteristic sound.

This reflective essay will lay emphasis on one of the learning needs I have developed during my two week taster placement in hospital. Reflection helps an individual build upon their skills and makes room for self-criticism as he or she can contemplate upon actions and make relevant changes (Taylor, 2000). I will be applying the â€Å"What†, â€Å"So what† and â€Å"Now what† model of reflection by Driscoll (2000) in this piece of work because it is a more coherent and comprehensible approach to follow when writing a reflective account and is also an easier guide to writing reflections. The incident that helped me achieve my learning need was when a diabetic patient in his late thirties known as patient A, was admitted with a diabetic foot ulcer medically referred to as a neuropathic foot ulcer. Krentz and Bailey, 2001 in their research found that neuropathic foot ulcers generate when diabetes causes nerve damage in the feet and alters the ability for the feet to feel pain. This causes unnoticed ulcers on the affected feet which later develop into bigger ulcers. On the morning of my third day, after handovers, I went on drug rounds with my mentor and for patient A, I noticed that he had 6 different types of drugs for his diabetic condition. Most of the drugs that were administered to him were also given to other diabetes patients on the ward. I told my mentor what I had noticed and he confirmed that those 6 drugs were commonly used for diabetic patients. I listed down those drugs in a small pocket diary I always carried along o n that ward. At first glance it may seem that Emily Dickinson has written a simple poem in â€Å"There Is No Frigate like a Book†. However, further analysis reveals that she believes reading is a gift to all. For some reason they believe that, theyare superior to women, so do some men in American culture. Yanomamomarriages are much different from that of American marriages. Yanomamo women aretreated as materialistic objects and promised by their father or brother to aYanomamo man in return for reciprocity. The reciprocity could be anotherYanomamo women or political alliances. The trades are often practiced in theYanomamo culture. Polygamy is also a part of the Yanomamo culture. Yanomamowomen are kept in the males possession. The Yanomamo man tries to collect asmany wives as he possibly can in order to demonstrate his power and masculinity. As polygamy in American Culture is referred to as bigamy which is against thelaw. Besides, polygamy, the practice of infanticide plays a role in the lack ofwomen in their society. Yanomamo prefer to parent a male child rather than afemale child, so in case a female is born she is killed at birth. This againproved their sexist beliefs that women are inferior. Many Yanomamo women fearingtheir husbands kill a female infant to avoid disappointing their so-calledbetter half. To the people of American culture certain procedures ofmurdering a new born baby would be considered brutal, horrific and mutilation. But to the Yanomamo choking an infant to death with a vine, suffocating theinfant by the placing a stick across her throat, or simply throwing the childagainst a tree and leaving it to suffer and then die is normal. Yet someAmericans would also suggest that abortion is just like murder also, so whatsthe difference! When an acceptable child is born into a Yanomamo family themother breast-feeds him for a relatively long time. Children are nursed untilthey reach the age of at most, three or four. A Yanomamo womens endeavor and search for aidis not always successful espically if her brothers are in a remote village thatyou could reach if you walked for a couple of days. But if her brothers arearound and close enough for some strange reason she might get a little morerespect (not too much). Alliances or formal pacts between groups areincorporated through trade and feasting. The relationships between these twoparties are strengthened when the exchange of women takes place. These alliances are for backup, just in case acountry decides that imperialism is the key to a strong nation, the othercountries who signed the treaty back them up. But warfare for any society in myopinion is barbaric and deplorable. The differences and similarities between theYanomamo culture and American culture maybe vast, but all humans have anadoption to their culture. If an aspect of the Yanomamo culture is differentfrom American culture its discriminated against because it is not understood. Keeping an open mind while I was reading the book was difficult because I wasshocked by some of the ways they conducted themselves. But I realized thatAmerican dont really conduct themselves in an orderly fashion at all timeeither. Amy April 16, 1999 Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia is an eating disorder that usually strikes women between the ages of fifteen and thirty-five. An estimated one thousand females will die each year from anorexia. About eighty percent of females suffer from a sub clinical eating disorder and twenty percent will turn into full-blown anorexics in their lifetime. These are statistics that we know of. Anorexia can be hidden very well by many that suffer from it; therefore there are many cases we do not know of. Anorexia is a disorder in which preoccupation with dieting and thinness leads to excessive weight loss. The individual may not realize that weight loss or restricted eating is a problem. (Internet Mental Health www.mentalhealth.com). Anorexia may not be noticed in the early stages because it often starts as an innocent diet. They often become hyperactive because they exercise frantically in an attempt to burn calories to lose weight. Even though the anorexic is emaciated, she still feels "fat" and wants to hide her "ugly, fat body". A victim does not need to appear underweight or even average to suffer any signs or symptoms of anorexia. Many men and women with eating disorders appear not to be underweight, but this does not mean they suffer any less or are in any less danger. Presence of a low self-esteem is the most common element in anorexia nervosa. Stress, anxiety and unhappiness can also be leading factors in an anorexic life. Anorexia is their way of dealing and coping with the negative things going on in their life. Most people with eating disorders share certain personality traits, low self-esteem, feelings of helplessness and a fear of becoming fat. People with Anorexia tend to be "too good to be true." They rarely disobey, keep their feelings to themselves, and tend to be perfectionists, good students, and excellent athletes. Some researchers believe that people with anorexia restrict food, particularly carbohydrates, to gain a sense of control in some area of their lives. They have followed the wishes of others in their lives, and they have not learned how to cope with the problems typical of adolescence, growing up, and becoming independent. Controlling their own weight offers two advantages in their eyes; first they can take control of their bodies and secondly, gain approval of others. It is not uncommon to find an anorexic that feels high after periods of starvation. This is due to their feelings of inadequacy. Their poor self image and perception leads to feelings of guilt, they feel like they never do anything right and nothing they ever do is enough. Starvation is an accomplishment in their eyes, something they can do right. They also feel that their life would be better if they could lose weight, or that more people would like them if they lost weight. Anorexics feel a need to control physical and emotional surroundings. In this way eating disorders are a negative coping mechanism, used to control emotions or to keep them suppressed. It feels easier to think about food, food intake, hunger, planning meals or avoiding them, instead of dealing with their emotions. Eating disorders can have a numbing effect, and can give victims a feeling of power over their emotions. In our society today there is an obsession with being thin in order to be beautiful. The waif look was recently popular causing many people to want to look like the models in magazines. Genetic factors can also play a role in anorexia. Eating disorders appear to run in families. Female relatives are most often affected. Although genetic factors may play a role in the development of anorexia, other influences play a role such as behavioral and environmental. A recent study found that mothers who are overly concerned about their daughter's weight and physical attractiveness
